Organization

Founded by Dr. Angela Yeung in the fall of 2010, the Greater San Diego Music Coterie welcomes the participation of musically trained individuals regardless of their age, race and background.  It offers performances throughout the greater San Diego area, from the North County and East County to the South Bay.  Its free concerts and open rehearsals embrace audiences of all economic and cultural levels, including the low income and homeless population.  Our music is carefully chosen to represent and reflect the diverse community of the greater San Diego area.  Every season the Greater San Diego Music Coterie showcases local young musicians, offering them the rare opportunity to perform with an orchestra.  It also hosts an annual Chamber Music Festival every February and summer.  The non-competitive Festival is open to musicians of all ages and musical levels, with groupings that mix the young and older musicians.

Our Mission:

(1)     to welcome the participation of musically trained individuals regardless of age, race and background, inspiring them to challenge themselves for the highest possible artistic achievement in every rehearsal and performance;

(2)     to provide the highest level of instruction and guidance to all participants through rehearsals and regular interaction with experienced music educators and professionals;

(3)     to enrich the lives of all, especially the young and the underserved, fostering in them self-confidence, a sense of teamwork and a communal quest for excellence;

(4)     to share the joy of music and individual musical talent with each other;

(5)     to present free performances to the public that are enjoyable, inspiring, and educational, with music that represents and reflects the diverse community of the greater San Diego area.

The Greater San Diego Music Coterie strives to reach audiences in all corners of the greater San Diego area.  We have offered enjoyable, uplifting and educational musical experience:

1     to multicultural audiences through our joint performances with organizations as diverse as the San Diego Chinese Art and Cultural Society and the Jewish Film Festival. Our collaborations with the Mariachi Jevenil de San Diego resulted in many joints concerts in the city of San Diego and a concert tour to Japan in the spring of 2018.
2     to seniors through concerts for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, senior centers and assisted living communities.
3    to the homeless and underserved, low income population through our open rehearsals in outdoor venues (e.g. parking lot of Canyon Ridge Baptist Church in Linda Vista, Carrol Canyon Business Park in Scripps Ranch) and concerts in public libraries (from Carmel Valley along the coast, to Julian in the north, and Point Loma in the south). Since the fall of 2022, the Greater San Diego Music Coterie has launched a monthly concert at All Saints Episcopal Church (6th Ave and Penn) that is free to the community.
4     to patients and their families in hospital lobbies (e.g. Sharp Memorial Hospital, Lakin Joan – VA Hospital) and the Ronald McDonald House.

The Greater San Diego Music Coterie received its not-for-profit status as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States in July 2012.
