Program for the concert

José Maurício Nunes Garcia (1767-1830), the remarkable and most influential composer from Brazil during the classical period, was the Master Musician of the Royal Chapel at the Prince Regent’s Palace in Rio de Janeiro. Through his regular contacts with the visiting Portuguese dignities and with the additional duty as archivist of the Royal music files, Garcia had access to the most up-to-date music from his European counterparts. His musical style shows a clear influence of Haydn, Mozart, and in particular Rossini.
The Mass of Saint Cecilia was Garcia’s last composition. Written in 1826, it was commissioned by the Rio’s Brotherhood of St. Cecilia. It was considered to be his greatest mass.
